The unit is divided into three conceptual blocks:

1. Cell biology and physiological processes;
2. Diversity, morphology and evolution of microalgae, macroalgae and marine angiosperms;
3. Environmental factors affecting growth and functioning of marine algae and plants, including human impacts and human uses.

Learning Outcomes

1. Apply the concepts of evolution to describe and classify marine plant groups
2. Describe the physiology of marine photosynthetic organisms and explain how they respond to their environment
3. Discuss and scrutinise the human uses of marine plants, and the impacts of human activity on their functioning and ecology
4. Demonstrate laboratory skills for handling, dissecting, examining and drawing marine plant specimens
